Hi-Def Vs Film

OK, I just got back from watching Miami Vice, a 135 million dollar "film" shot in H-D. All I can say is: Just Say No to Videoooo!!!!! Yikes! Why is God's name, if you have that kind of money, would you want to shoot on video? The flesh tones are blocked-up, there's color ringing, it's not as sharp, not to mention irratically grainy. It just looks BAD!!! Learn it, Know it, LiveIt!!! Calling it HD is just putting lipstick on Frankenstein. HD is VIDEO.... It looks like video. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Electronic Cinema won't everntually look great (Video projection already does). It's just that it doesn't look great now. In three or four years maybe but stop already until it does. Even then why would want to shoot HD when film has more resolution, is more forgiving, has a greater dynamic range and at the moment is still cheaper (unless you're shooting student films on small camcorders). I don't get it.

As I thought about what I said here, I want to make it clear that I do think EC (Electronic Cinema) is the wave of the future. It eventually will look better than film, it's just that it doesn't yet nor will it probably for several years. If I were making a very low budget film there's no doubt that HD is the way to go. I just think if you're making a multi-million dollar movie there is absolutely no reason to lower your image quality by going with HD. Pushing a HD shoot in that situation is simply trying to smash that square peg into the round hole... for the sake of being "hip".
