Re: BIG THANKS
Mavado88,
My sincere thanks for your thoughts. I hope you get a chance to see that Masters of Horror episode that I did. I think it turned out rather well. I've just finished shooting PARASOMNIA which is a thriller film with many horror elements. It's turning out to be very weird in a very cool way I think. It's really not like any film I can think of. I hope we get a chance to talk film soon. All the Best - WM

Re: BIG THANKS
Parasomnia is finished shooting... (well mostly anyway. I'm still shooting some little inserts and stuff)
The Visual FX are proceeding nicely FANTASY II has signed on to do some of the miniatures, along with Eric Newman and my dear friend Robert (Beetlejuice) Short. The film has turned out amazingly well. We are trying to have it ready for a fall release. More soon...

Re: BIG THANKS
Dear Mr. Malone,
Thanks for your reply and congrats to the finishing of Parasomnia. I'm sure the movie's gonna be great and I hope you gonna have a big success with it. What I'm also interested in: What do you think about the other Dark Castle movies that followed HOHH? I actually liked all of them - some more, some less - except for the recently released "The Reaping", which was pretty awful I think and remembered me of the horrible Wicker Man remake of last year. The best was I think Ghost ship, with its great opening sequence and the fantastic flashback scene at the end of the movie, shot in that very cool slowmo style. Which one was your favourite? And what do you think about the recent "torture movie" boom, like the SAW or Hostel franchise? Which horror/thriller movie of the last months did you like most?
Are you gonna watch Return to House on Hill when it comes out or have you already seen parts of it? I heard its gonna have alternative endings / story lines the viewer can choose on the DVD. What do you think about that?
Oh, and one last question, cause I recently saw that movie again: What do you think about the remake of The Haunting, which came out the same year as HOHH. Allthough both movies share the same haunted house plot, Jan de Bonts is (of course) complete different. I thought it had some good elements in it, first of all the gigantic gothic set, score and some good acting but it was just overloaded with CGI ghosts that destroyed most of the atmosphere. The (mostly) handmade scares in HOHH were simply more frightening.
Sorry about all these questions but it's so great to get the chance to talk to a movie director in person, hope you're not too busy to answer some of them.
Best regards,
Mavado88

Re: BIG THANKS
I can't thank you enough for your kind words. When I made HHH, there had not been any ghost movies or haunted house movies in a long time. I was really excited about remaking that film because I thought it was a wonderful opportunity to make something really scary. I'm glad so many have responded to it. I remember watching Creature from the Balck Lagoon when I was a kid and how that film took me to a different place and inspired a sense of wonder in me. I can only hope as a filmmaker to do the same for others. I hope we do get a chance to meet and have that chat. All the Best WM
PS (Sorry Elizabethian for using your handle the computer wouldn't let me loggin as myself)

Re: BIG THANKS
Dear Mr. Malone,
I discovered this site just last night and I'm excited to be able to talk to you with this message board. I own both Fear Dot com and House On Haunted Hill. They are among some of my favorites in my horror movie collection.
Among my main comments, I really enjoyed Fear Dot Com. The musical score was wonderfully creepy and I especially enjoyed the bit of music that played when the child version of Jeannie (with the ball. If I’m thinking of the correct person, haven’t watched the movie in a while) would show up, such as at the beginning on the train tracks. Though I read some of your comments as to why some people didn’t like it and I personally think that people didn’t like it because of its resemblances to The Ring (and maybe this has been mentioned already). Though I find those similarities to be quite limited while watching the movie. Anyways, in regards with the music, I’m glad you put Rammstein in there (Sonne) because this movie is how I got interested in the German band. But I’m talking more about the music than the movie aren’t I. As far as the movie Fear Dot Com goes, I honestly would have like to see more of The Doctor – specifically his background and past. He was such an interesting character and the actor that played him did such a good, dark job of doing it. But I remember with House On Haunted Hill that you wanted to do more with the Pritchard (caretaker) character but wasn’t able to. Maybe it was a similar constraint or maybe it wasn’t what you had envisioned. Either way, I still really enjoyed the movie and have to watch it every once and a while.
Also, I enjoy listening to your commentaries on the movies. They provide a lot of insight and you seem quite down to earth while explaining things. I don’t know how many people listen to commentaries but I usually listen to them if offered and some commentaries are quite humorous, Resident Evil Apocalypse is one example; and others are quite serious and monotone, very hard to listen to. I guess it depends on preference but yours (at least from the two movies I have) are very interesting. I know I’m aspiring to be a published writer and have a few horror stories for ideas and sometimes I’ll tell my brother that “If any of my stories ever get published and opted for movies, I’d want Malone to do some of my scarier stories.”
With House On Haunted Hill, that movie was excellently done and Geoffrey Rush sure looked like Vincent Price no matter how you look at it. I understand it wasn’t on purpose but it is fun to compare the two. I have seen the sequel and as the law of movies goes, the sequel is never better than the original; but I was wondering if you were ever considered to direct the sequel? I saw it and didn’t like it myself; too much of an Indiana Jones type freak fest (the line “It belongs in a museum” really didn’t belong in this type of movie). And I guess I was just wondering where you might have taken the sequel if they had asked you?
Anyways, I have yet to see your Masters of Horror episode but I plan on doing it and now that you have this Parasomnia movie coming out, I’m looking forward to seeing that. It’s interesting because some of the dream-like scenes in the trailer remind me of some of the settings/backdrops from Hellbound: Hellraiser 2. And I have yet to see any of your older movies such as Creature but I would like to see them. Well, I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your movies and it turned into a paper length letter. So keep up the good work.

Re: BIG THANKS
My sincere thanks for your very kind words. I'm really glad you enjoyed HHH. It was a great opportunity to play with a lot of the things that I always wanted to do. There hadn't been any ghost movies in a long time before that film. Re; FearDotCom. I think this is a greatly misunderstood film. I totally get why many don't like it and I don't think they are wrong. It's not a completely sucessful endeavor. The film was really designed more as a"tone poem" than a traditional horror piece. Both my Mom and my cat died during filming while I was away and I'm sure it impacted that film a lot. Not to mentioned it was shot in Luxemburg and it rained every day while I was there. Still in all, I'm very glad you like it. Please watch out for PARASOMNIA (Dreams of the Sleepwalker). It will be coming out in 2009. I think you might dig it.
